LAHORE: On the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has greatly expanded its public Wi-Fi program, doubling its presence throughout the province to enhance digital connectivity.

PSCA officials revealed that free Wi-Fi access points have been raised from 230 to 430 in Lahore. The new service has also spread to 22 districts as opposed to 11, including Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, Attock, Hasan Abdal, Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree.

This step comes after a series of recent upgrades done to provide better internet access in urban and semi-urban Punjab. The authority had installed public Wi-Fi in Gujrat city last week as part of this expanding network.

Based on PSCA statistics, over 37.22 million users have enjoyed the service so far, with over 905 terabytes of data used. The statistics highlight the increasing need for quality and free internet access in public places.

In order to address heightened usage requirements and enhance performance, the PSCA has upgraded its network to Wi-Fi 6 technology. This upgrade is anticipated to offer users improved internet speeds, reduced latency, and increased stability, particularly in dense areas.

The PSCA’s free Wi-Fi project is in line with the government’s wider strategy to foster digital inclusion and smart city solutions. By enhancing public internet access, the initiative is bridging the digital divide while facilitating convenience for millions of urban residents.
