LAHORE: In a major initiative for the uplift of agriculture in Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has introduced record breaking schemes of farmer-friendly programs in 2024.
Some of these initiatives include launching the largest Kisan Card in the world, the Green Tractors Program, the super seeder provision program, and the largest ever graduation internship in the history of Pakistan.
These programs intend to offer significant support to farmers within the province, allowing them to improve their productivity and livelihoods.
Among these, the major highlight is the Green Tractors Program through which a minimum of 5,000 tractors have entered in Punjab, whereas 2,500 have been distributed so far among farmers. To further make them available at more reasonable prices, the government has decided to give subsidy worth Rs 1 million to each tractor.
In addition, young agriculture graduates are being involved to lead farmers in the field and also receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 60,000. This move is supposed to improve agricultural practices but also provide employment for young graduates in the field.
The government has ensured that DAP and other fertilizers are available at fixed rates. As a result, Punjab has managed to complete 99 percent of the total wheat cultivation target. This is truly a significant achievement and proof of the success of such initiatives.
Model agriculture malls are also being set up in Multan, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, and Sahiwal, which will serve marketing platforms for the farmers as well as essential services.
The Punjab government is also considering a project aimed at regaining canola gardens and would be implemented by spending Rs 1.5 billion.
This program is hoped to increase production of this very important crop for Punjab’s agricultural sectors. Launching these initiatives proves that the government is seriously committed to the welfare of farmers as well as the development of this sector in the province.
As Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif properly stated, “In the past, only slogans were chanted for the prosperity of farmers; only the PML-N government works practically for the well-being of farmers”.
