LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to introduce modern fruit and vegetable markets across the province. It will renovate 188 old fruit and vegetable markets on advanced lines.
The sources indicate that these markets will have transparent auction systems, with off-season vegetables being available due to modern farming techniques.
Help desks will be established; an online tracking system will be activated through the Safe City Authority, and clean, functional toilets will be provided for both buyers and traders.
The government announced that auction sheds would be functional at all 188 modern markets, and filtration plants would ensure clean drinking water.
Price boards would be displayed, and help desks would guide consumers. In addition, more than 266,000 streetlights will be set up, and under the Waste-to-Value scheme, the green waste of fruits and vegetables will be converted to biogas and poultry feed. Drainages restored and covered manholes.
A “tracking on wheel” system will monitor supply and demand, while every truck entering Punjab is being linked to the Safe City Authority.
The new modern markets will also be established in Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Mian Channu, and Mandi Bahauddin. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed the adoption of modern techniques in off-season vegetables and ordered stern action against price control magistrates deceiving the public, including termination to imprisonment.
She said that secretaries to the market committees will be recruited on merit through the Public Service Commission, the mafia culture has been eliminated from Punjab, and the government is committed to providing flour and bread at a lower price to the people.
