Punjab starts issuing driving permits to minors

LAHORE: The Punjab Traffic Police has started to give driving permits to minors who are between 16 and 18 years old throughout the entire province. The new program, which starts on March 1, 2026, will establish regulations for young riders while creating methods to verify their competency to ride on public roads.

The updated policy establishes that every juvenile driving permit will cost Rs500 for processing, while candidates must fulfill particular requirements to obtain their permits.

Officials emphasize that parents must provide their consent for application processing because applications will not move forward without this requirement.

The juvenile permit requires applicants to complete both a road test and a sign test, which helps verify their understanding of traffic regulations before they can drive on public roads.

The new traffic rules establish that permit holders must not operate motorcycles with engine sizes above 125cc, while electric bikes face particular restrictions that ensure safe operation for teenagers.

The traffic authorities declared that the juvenile permit will cease to be valid when the holder reaches 18 years. The permit holder must obtain a regular driving licence to maintain legal riding status.

This policy represents a component of Punjab’s road safety program, which has introduced various initiatives such as motorcycle speed limit enforcement and the implementation of modern traffic control systems.
