LAHORE: Traffic police operations have intensified in Punjab province to ensure the use of helmets and seat belts.
According to officials, fines have been imposed on more than 345,000 citizens across the province for not wearing helmets, while more than 49,000 challan tickets have been issued in Lahore alone.
A traffic police spokesperson said that as a result of effective enforcement, an 85 percent reduction in complaints of not wearing helmets has been recorded across the province. At the same time, an 82 percent reduction in head injuries due to the use of helmets has also been seen.
Similarly, more than 7,000 challan tickets have been issued for driving without seat belts this month. There has also been a significant reduction in seat belt incidents in other cities of the province. Officials say that indiscriminate and uniform operations are underway to ensure that all citizens comply with the laws.
DIG Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazir has said that the purpose of banning helmets and seat belts is not only to impose fines but also to protect the precious lives of citizens. According to him, wearing a helmet can prevent serious head injuries in the event of an accident, and seat belts ensure the safety of vehicle occupants.
A traffic police spokesperson said that due to strict enforcement and public awareness campaigns, there has been a clear improvement in road discipline and citizens are now more careful in obeying the rules.
