Questions raised over sale of non-halal candy in Lahore’s store

LAHORE: A social media post has sparked concern among consumers after alleging that an imported candy named ‘Alpenliebe’ being sold at Green Valley Lahore may not be halal.

According to the viral post, Alpenliebe 2Chew Strawberry Candy, reportedly imported from Vietnam, does not display a halal certification logo on its packaging and lists gelatin as one of its ingredients.

The post claims that because the source of the gelatin is not specified, consumers cannot determine whether it is halal. According to research, 90 percent of the time gelatin is extracted from pork, which is considered ‘Haram’ in Islam.

What is Gelatin?

Gelatin is a colorless, flavorless protein derived from the collagen found in animal bones, skin, and connective tissues. Porcine (pork) gelatin, primarily extracted from pig skins, is one of the most common sources, widely used in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics

Why Does It Matter?

In Pakistan, where the majority of the population is Muslim, the consumption of pork and pork-derived ingredients is prohibited under Islamic dietary laws.

For this reason, imported food products are generally expected to comply with Pakistan’s food safety and halal labeling requirements where applicable.

Consumer rights advocates say retailers should ensure that imported food products meet all regulatory requirements and provide clear ingredient and halal certification information so shoppers can make informed purchasing decisions.

Food Authority Should Take Action

The viral post has prompted calls for the Punjab Food Authority and other relevant regulators to investigate whether the product complies with Pakistani food labeling and halal standards, and to take appropriate action if any violations are found.

Consumers Demand to Stop Import

The customers have sparked outrage that the Food Authority should take strict action, demanding that authorities stop the import of such products.

Several consumers also demanded that the import and sale of food products without verified halal certification or clearly identified gelatin sources be stopped to safeguard consumer confidence in Pakistan’s halal food market.
