ISLAMABAD: The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has successfully helped resolve key issues affecting the continuous supply of the Russian Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine to Pakistan, officials said.
The FMD vaccine, manufactured in Russia, has been imported into Pakistan since 2012 through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and private sector channels. It has played a significant role in protecting livestock from one of the most contagious diseases affecting cattle, buffalo, and other animals.
According to details, vaccination efforts were disrupted in March 2024, raising concerns among livestock farmers and stakeholders about a potential increase in disease outbreaks and related economic losses.
Officials said the SIFC facilitated coordination among relevant stakeholders and helped resolve outstanding issues through mutual agreement, ensuring the continuation of vaccine supplies.
The development is expected to pave the way for the resumption of vaccination campaigns across the country, strengthening animal health protection measures and supporting livestock productivity.
Authorities believe the renewed vaccine supply will help safeguard farmers’ livelihoods, improve meat and dairy production, and contribute to Pakistan’s broader efforts to expand livestock exports.
The move is also seen as a reflection of growing cooperation between Pakistan and Russia in the field of animal health and agricultural development.
