Slow internet speed to persist until early October: PTA

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that repairs to the damaged submarine cable, which has been causing internet disruptions, are expected to be completed by early October.

Internet services are likely to remain slow until then. The recent internet slowdown has resulted in significant economic losses, with the business community and internet service providers (ISPs) attributing the issue to government efforts to monitor internet traffic.

In recent weeks, Pakistan has seen a significant downturn in internet speeds, resulting in frustrating experiences for users. Mobile data connections are struggling to support seamless WhatsApp usage, with difficulties in sending and downloading media and voice notes. Even broadband connections are not immune, with sluggish browsing speeds hindering online activities.

The PTA has identified faults in two submarine cables, SMW4 and AAE-1, as the primary cause of the internet slowdown. The authority has assured that the repair of the SMW-4 cable by early October and the AAE-1 cable will enhance internet performance.

However, Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja has denied allegations of intentional internet disruptions, stating that the government is upgrading its web management system to address cybersecurity threats.

In addition, this update comes after PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman faced scrutiny from lawmakers during a National Assembly panel session, where he initially estimated the repair would be completed by August 27.

Moreover, Pakistan’s slow internet speeds may lead to significant economic losses, including Rs12 billion annually, Rs3 billion in reduced telecom revenue, and up to $300 million due to internet disruptions. This may also prompt multinational companies to relocate their back offices from Pakistan.
