LAHORE: After the Punjab government implemented a sugar cess, the price of sugar increased in the open market of Lahore.
In Lahore, it increased by Rs 10 to Rs 160 per kg. According to market sources, the price of sugar should have been Rs 150. After the increase, a 50 kg bag of sugar started selling for Rs 7,500, while the ex-mill rate of sugar is Rs 135 per kg.
According to the Grocery Merchants Association, there is ample sugar in the market. There is no shortage.
It should be noted that the Punjab government has implemented a sugar cess of Rs 5 on 40 kg of sugar from January 1, of which Rs 2.5 will be paid by the sugar mill and Rs 2.5 by the farmer.
