Arijit Singh announces retirement from film playback singing

MUMBAI: Popular Bollywood singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing in films.

Arijit Singh confirmed in a detailed New Year message on his Instagram that he will no longer record songs for films and will not accept any new playback singing assignments.

The singer wrote in his message that Hello, Happy New Year to everyone. I am deeply grateful to all of you for loving me as a listener for so many years. I am happy to announce that I will no longer accept any new assignments as a playback vocalist, I am ending this journey here. It has been a wonderful and memorable journey.

Allaying the concerns of fans, he added that I have not stopped making music. I am just stepping away from playback singing. I will continue my journey as an independent artist.

The singer also revealed that some projects are still under completion under some agreements made in the past, due to which a few new songs may be released during this year. However, after completing these responsibilities, he will focus entirely on independent music.

Arijit Singh’s announcement surprised millions of fans who had been following his music since his early rise in the 2000s.

Fans on social media expressed surprise, sadness and gratitude, as Arijit Singh’s voice had become a permanent and recognizable identity of Indian cinema over the years.
