NEW DEHLI: The highly-anticipated release of Pakistan’s blockbuster film “The Legend of Maula Jatt” in India’s Punjab state has been stalled due to a court-ordered stay.

Distribution holder Nadeem Mandviwalla confirmed that an Indian ministry obtained the stay order, halting the film’s screening. Mandviwalla, a prominent Pakistani distributor and exhibitor, attributed the delay to resistance from certain parties and politicians.

Despite holding exclusive distribution rights in Pakistan, Nadeem acknowledged Zee India’s collaboration to facilitate the film’s release in India.

“The Legend of Maula Jatt” starring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, was set to release in Indian Punjab on October 2, 2024, (Wednesday), after a decade-long hiatus of Pakistani films in India.

The last Pakistani film to release in India was 2011’s “Bol”. India banned Pakistani film imports in 2019 following the Pulwama incident, prompting Pakistan to reciprocate with a ban on Indian films.

Moreover, Director Bilal Lashari announced the film’s India release on September 18, in collaboration with Zee Studios and Zindagi.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has been particularly vocal against the film’s release. Earlier this month, Ameya Khopkar, President of the MNS Cinema Wing, said to ANI, “We will not entertain any Pakistani film or actors in India,” urging others across the country to join their opposition. He added, “This movie will not be released. If this happens, there will be a strong agitation.”

Khopkar emphasized the emotional weight behind this stance, citing ongoing tensions at the borders. “Our soldiers are dying… Why do we need Pakistani actors here? Don’t we have enough talent?” he questioned.

Despite the challenges, Mandviwalla remains optimistic, citing the film’s quality and star power. “The Legend of Maula Jatt” previously grossed Rs 400 crores domestically and internationally. Its success in India would mark a significant milestone for Pakistani cinema.
