ISLAMABAD: Arshad Nadeem made the nation proud by winning the gold medal with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters in the javelin throw final of the Paris Olympics.

The athlete will receive prizes totalling more than Rs 150 million from various government officials, celebrities and organizations.

Key contributions include:

  1. PKR 100 million pledge by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz
  2. Governor Punjab Sardar Salim Haider Khan announced PKR 20 lakhs.
  3. Rs 50 million from Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, with an additional Rs 1 million from Sindh Governor Kamran Tesuri.
  4. PKR 10 lakhs from popular singer Ali Zafar and cricketer Ahmed Shahzad

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday issued instructions to confer one of the country’s highest civilian honors on javelin player Arshad Nadeem, who won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics with an impressive throw of 92.97 meters.

Nadeem, who hails from a poor family in a rural town in the central Pakistani region of Khanewal, created history by setting a new Games record and ending his country’s 32-year Olympic medal drought.

He was expected to face stiff competition from other athletes, particularly India’s defending champion Neeraj Chopra, but put a lot of pressure on him with his record-breaking throw in the second attempt.
