Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday issued instructions to confer one of the country’s highest civilian honors on javelin player Arshad Nadeem, who won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics with an impressive throw of 92.97 meters.
Nadeem, who hails from a poor family in a rural town in the central Pakistani region of Khanewal, created history by setting a new Games record and ending his country’s 32-year Olympic medal drought.
He was expected to face stiff competition from other athletes, particularly India’s defending champion Neeraj Chopra, but put a lot of pressure on him with his record-breaking throw in the second attempt.
