LONDON: Former Warwickshire wicketkeeper Keith Piper has passed away at the age of 56 after a prolonged battle with cancer, according to reports.
Piper was regarded as one of the finest wicketkeepers of his generation and enjoyed a distinguished county cricket career spanning 16 years with Warwickshire.
During his first-class career, he played around 200 matches and claimed more than 500 catches behind the stumps, earning recognition for his consistency and skill as a wicketkeeper. He also made valuable contributions with the bat throughout his career.
One of the most memorable moments of Piper’s career came in 1994 when he scored an unbeaten 116 against Durham at Edgbaston. The match is best remembered for Brian Lara’s world-record unbeaten 501, the highest individual score in first-class cricket history, with Piper playing a supporting role in the historic innings.
Born in Leicester in 1969, Piper developed his cricketing skills at the Haringey Cricket College in north London, an institution credited with helping pave the way for the modern cricket academy system.
Piper was a key member of a highly successful Warwickshire side during the 1990s. He featured in seven finals at Lord’s between 1993 and 2002, helping the club win three titles. He also played an important role in Warwickshire’s back-to-back County Championship triumphs in 1994 and 1995, as well as their Sunday League success in 1994.
Despite being considered a strong contender for England selection on several occasions, Piper never earned a full international cap. However, he represented England A on two tours during the mid-1990s.
His career was also marked by setbacks. In 1997, he received a four-month ban for a drug-related offence, while a positive cannabis test in 2005 contributed to the end of his professional playing career. He announced his retirement later that year.
Following retirement, Piper briefly served as coach of Warwickshire’s second XI team.
