Pakistan’s preparations for the upcoming tournament suffered a setback after a Pakistan Pro Hockey League injury ruled out star forward Hannan Shahid ahead of the competition. The young player picked up a hamstring problem during a recent match against Australia in Hobart, forcing medical staff to advise immediate rest.

According to team sources, Shahid experienced discomfort during the game and later underwent medical assessment. Doctors identified a first-grade hamstring injury. As a result, they recommended at least four weeks of recovery to prevent further damage. Consequently, the forward will miss the start of the Pro Hockey League.

The Pakistan Pro Hockey League injury comes at a difficult time for the national side, which is aiming to rebuild momentum on the international stage. Shahid, who belongs to Lahore, has played a key role in several victories. His pace and attacking instincts often helped Pakistan create scoring opportunities in tight matches.

Moreover, his absence could affect team balance. Coaches may now need to adjust their attacking strategy before the tournament begins. While officials have not yet named a replacement, selectors are expected to review available options soon.

There is also growing concern about Shahid’s availability for the Hockey World Cup qualifying round. The event is scheduled to take place in Egypt from March 1 to March 7. Given the recommended recovery period, his participation remains uncertain. However, final decisions will depend on his rehabilitation progress and medical clearance.

Injuries before major tournaments often challenge teams, yet they also test squad depth. Therefore, Pakistan’s management will likely focus on fitness management to avoid further setbacks. At the same time, supporters hope the forward will recover quickly and return to action without long-term complications.

Pakistan has been working to strengthen its hockey program in recent years. International exposure through leagues and qualifiers is considered essential for improving rankings and rebuilding confidence. Losing an in-form attacker just before a major event highlights the physical demands of modern hockey.

For now, the priority remains Shahid’s full recovery. Team officials are expected to monitor his condition closely in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Pakistan will continue preparations, determined to stay competitive despite the unexpected blow.
