PCB coins Shaheen Afridi’s name for ODI Captain

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday appointed pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new Pakistan men’s ODI captain in place of Mohammad Rizwan.

As a part of his first task, the left-arm seamer will captain team in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, which is scheduled to be played at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad from November 4 to 8.

As per PCB, Shaheen’s appointment for the upcoming series was finalized today, during a meeting held in Islamabad .

The statement said that the meeting was attended by white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, Director of High Performance Aqib Javed, and members of the selection committee.

The 25-year-old fast bowler has played 66 ODIs and 92 T20Is for Pakistan, in which he has taken a total of 249 wickets.

In 32 Test matches, which do not include the ongoing second Test against South Africa at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Shaheen has taken 120 wickets.

Shaheen Shah has previously led Pakistan in 5 T20 Internationals against New Zealand on their home ground in 2024.

It should be noted that before him, wicketkeeper-batsman Muhammad Rizwan was leading the national ODI team; however, the team failed to perform well under his leadership.
