Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage’s father dies during Asia Cup 2025

ABU DHABI: The father of Sri Lankan cricket player Dunith Wellalage, Suranga Wellalage, passed away in Colombo, allegedly due to a heart attack.

Currently, 22-year-old Dunith Wellalage plays for Sri Lanka at the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates. He is regarded as one of the most talented young cricket players in the country.

Wellalage participated in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup match versus Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi earlier today. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi blasted him for five straight sixes in the last over.

Earlier, in the 11th match of the Asia Cup T20 2025, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by 6 wickets to qualify for the Super Four stage.

Sri Lanka easily achieved Afghanistan’s target of 170 runs in the 19th over for the loss of 4 wickets.

This important Group B match in the Asia Cup was played in Abu Dhabi, where Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and decided to bat first against Sri Lanka.

After this defeat, Afghanistan’s journey in the Asia Cup 2025 ended, while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualified for the Super Four stage from Group B.

In Group B, Sri Lanka is in first position with 6 points after winning 3 consecutive matches, while Bangladesh has 4 points.
