NEW YORK: South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in a low-scoring match of their T20 World Cup 2024 opener at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, here on Monday.

As per the details, South Africa lost two early wickets in a tentative start to their chase of 78 to win in New York, as ball continues to dominate bat in the opening game in Group D.

Earlier, South Africa’s bowling masterclass illuminated New York after the fall of wickets in the first match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in New York.

Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first but the South African bowlers got extra bounce from the wicket.

Ottneil Baartman dismissed Pathum Nissanka off his first ball while Keshav Maharaj took two wickets in an over to put the innings in trouble.

The introduction of Anrich Nortje as the fifth bowler did not dampen the Sri Lankan batsmen as the Proteas pacer took four wickets for the loss of seven wickets in his four overs, ending hopes of recovery in the first innings.
