CALIFORNIA: After glimpsing the overhauls in iOS 26, we’re finally looking at Apple’s latest smartphone, the iPhone 17.

Sure, that’s still well over a month away, if Apple continues following its traditional release timeframe, at least — but we haven’t been left entirely in the dark regarding the appearance of the new phones.

As with the vast majority of unreleased iPhones, rumors and leaks have trickled in on the hardware front before the official announcement. Here’s what we’re hoping for and what we can reasonably expect to get from Cupertino this September.

What are the latest iPhone 17 rumors and reports?

Not all iPhone rumors are the same, and all need to be taken with a grain of salt. The news comes via a MacRumors report stating that the internal battery pack of the new super-thin iPhone Air is only 2.49mm thick, half as thick as the iPhone 17 Pro battery.

The leak was published on the Korean-language Naver blog, where they compare the purported batteries of the iPhone 17 Air and 17 Pro side by side. The same report stated that the 17 Air’s battery life was only 2,800 mAh, according to MacRumors. (That’s less battery life than today’s iPhone 16 models.)

When will the iPhone 17 lineup be announced?

Typically, the flagship phones come out in September. It’s a bit too early for the exact dates; some years Apple doesn’t provide more than a week or two of advance notice before sending out invites and having the event.

But years of past tradition indicate that sometime in September would be the time when the 17 models emerge. This line of smartphones might be the last to adhere to that trend, however.

There have been rumors that the unveiling of the iPhone 18 lineup in 2026 will be divided into a pro-tier release in the fall and a regular model release the next spring.

What will the new iPhone 17 series entail?

Design leaks indicate Apple is constructing an extremely thin phone, most probably called the iPhone 17 Air to correspond with Apple’s ultralight laptop naming convention.

Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, a frequent reliable source of top-notch information regarding Apple, wrote in January that the iPhone 17 Air will feature a standard A19 chip and feature but one camera lens.

It can also employ Apple’s new in-house modem, which debuted in February on the iPhone 16e. More information on this development could leak before September, but that is what we have at the moment.

  • Camera: A new 24MP front-facing camera is expected across the series.
  • Rear Camera: The Pro models may get an upgraded 48MP telephoto lens.
  • iPhone 17 Air: May feature a single-lens 48MP rear camera, according to MacRumors.

Performance and Hardware:

  • Processors: The iPhone 17 and 17 Air are expected to use the A18 and A19 chips, respectively. The Pro models will likely feature the A19 Pro chip, according to The Economic Times and Tech Advisor.
  • RAM: Pro models may get a RAM upgrade to 12GB.
  • Cooling: The Pro models are rumored to feature a vapor chamber cooling system for better heat management.
  • Modem: The iPhone 17 Air may be the first to feature an Apple-designed 5G modem, while the standard and Pro models may stick with Qualcomm chips, according to MacRumors.
  • Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 7 support is anticipated.

Other Notable Features:

  • Charging: Wireless charging speeds may increase to 50W via MagSafe.
  • Software: The iPhone 17 series will likely ship with iOS 16.
  • New UI: The new iOS version may include a “Liquid Glass” visual design.
  • New Features: Expect features like Call Screening, Hold Assist, AI-powered Maps, and group chat polls in Messages

Release Date:

While the exact release date is not yet confirmed, it is widely expected to be in September 2025.
