WhatsApp Strict Account Security Feature Targets High-Risk Cyber Threats

WhatsApp has rolled out a new optional safety tool aimed at users facing serious online threats, strengthening platform defenses against targeted cyberattacks. The feature, known as WhatsApp strict account security, is designed for individuals who require higher protection than standard settings, including journalists, activists, and public figures.

WhatsApp introduces stricter protection controls

The new option appears as a simple toggle inside WhatsApp’s settings and activates multiple safeguards at once. When enabled, it limits how unknown contacts can interact with a user’s account, reducing exposure to malicious content and unwanted communication.

WhatsApp says the feature responds to growing risks such as spyware operations, social engineering attacks, and surveillance attempts that often target high-profile users. While end-to-end encryption already protects message content, attackers have increasingly exploited calls, links, and file previews as entry points.

How the new setting work for WhatsApp strict account security

Once switched on, the strict mode blocks media files and document attachments sent by unknown numbers. It also turns off link previews, preventing suspicious thumbnails from loading automatically. In addition, calls from unknown contacts are silenced, cutting off a common tactic used in harassment or attack attempts.

Security experts note that these interaction channels have been abused in past hacking campaigns, including so-called zero-click exploits that require little or no user action. By restricting these features, WhatsApp aims to reduce attack surfaces without affecting regular conversations with known contacts.

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, positions the update alongside similar “lockdown-style” security options already offered by other major technology platforms. The company says the feature is optional and best suited for users who prioritize safety over convenience.
