CALIFORNIA: WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to make voice or video calls using just their username instead of their phone number.

This feature will allow users to communicate while maintaining privacy.

According to reports, WhatsApp will in the future allow users to make calls by searching for a username directly in the Calls tab, and will not need to share their phone number.

If the desired username is found, it will appear in the search results, and the user will also be able to see basic information according to their privacy settings.

However, there will be a condition for this feature: you will be able to call any username only if you either have an existing chat with that person, or they have not activated a security feature called ‘username key’.

Username key has an additional passcode security that is revealed to the person calling for the first time; otherwise, the call will not be possible. According to WhatsApp, all calls made through the username will be secured with end-to-end encryption.

This feature is currently in development and will be released for iOS users first in an upcoming update.
