SRINAGAR: At least 25 people were killed in a gunfight in the tourist resort of Pahalgam in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, with the death toll expected to rise.
According to Indian media, the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately at the scene and fled immediately. Kashmir Media Service reported that the attackers targeted tourists who were enjoying a walk in the Besran Meadows.
Initially, five people were reported dead and 20 seriously injured. However, due to poor emergency response, the death toll on the spot rose to 20.
Occupied Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the incident as tragic, calling it one of the deadliest attacks targeting tourists in recent years.
Kashmir Media Service added that the attack still took place despite tight security and additional deployment in view of the influx of tourists.
