ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a landslide alert for Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, warning of increased risks due to expected rainfall and rapidly melting glaciers.
According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), intermittent rain is forecast from June 27 to July 3, which, combined with accelerated glacier melt, could trigger landslides, rockfalls, and debris flows in mountainous regions.
The NDMA stated that the current weather conditions are consistent with its seasonal forecast issued three to four months ago. The authority has been providing advance warnings to all relevant departments to help them prepare for potential emergencies and minimize risks.
The advisory warns that major highways, including the Karakoram Highway (KKH/N-35), Jaglot-Skardu Road (JSR), and several connecting roads, may face temporary closures due to landslides during the forecast period.
Local administrations have been directed to closely monitor vulnerable locations, while emergency response teams have been placed on high alert for rapid deployment if required. Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) have also been instructed to ensure the availability of machinery, equipment, and emergency resources.
The NDMA has urged residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel in mountainous areas, particularly during or immediately after heavy rainfall. Travelers are advised to follow instructions issued by local authorities, traffic police, and law enforcement agencies.
The authority also warned that landslides could temporarily disrupt road links, electricity supply, and communication networks. It has instructed relevant agencies to continuously monitor glacial lakes, rivers, and changing weather conditions.
Citizens have been encouraged to stay updated through the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for the latest weather forecasts, safety advisories, and emergency information.
