PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert ahead of forecast heavy monsoon rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of urban flooding, landslides and flash floods in several parts of the province from July 1 to July 5.

According to the PDMA, there is a strong possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms during the five days.

All relevant departments and district administrations have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for any emergency.

The authority warned that heavy rains could trigger landslides in upper districts and cause flooding in local streams and rivers. It also highlighted a high risk of urban flooding in the cities of Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swat, and Abbottabad.

The PDMA further cautioned that strong winds and windstorms may damage weak structures, mud houses, and rooftop solar panels. District administrations have been instructed to complete preventive measures immediately, while relief teams, heavy machinery and emergency services have been ordered to remain operational around the clock.

A public advisory issued by the authority urged citizens and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions and to stay away from rain-fed rivers, streams, and other vulnerable areas to prevent loss of life and property.

Rain Likely to Bring Relief from Heat in Punjab

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rain and strong winds in various parts of Punjab from July 1, raising hopes of relief from the ongoing spell of intense heat.

According to the Met Office, weather conditions remained extremely hot and dry across most districts of Punjab, including Lahore, on Monday, with temperatures rising sharply due to strong sunshine and high humidity levels.

Meteorologists said a new weather system is expected to enter the country, with its initial effects likely to be felt in Punjab. Rainfall accompanied by strong winds is forecast in several cities, which may help lower temperatures and improve weather conditions.

In Lahore, the minimum temperature was recorded at 31 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is expected to reach 42 degrees Celsius. Similar hot conditions are likely to persist in other plain areas of the province before the arrival of the rain system.

Experts have advised people to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours, increase water intake and take precautionary measures, including covering their heads when leaving home.

The Meteorological Department said the expected rainfall could provide relief from the ongoing heat wave, while urging citizens to stay informed about the latest weather updates and advisories.
