LONDON: The British government has announced that it will collect about 10,000 pounds from them for housing and basic expenses under the new Immigration and Refugee Bill.
According to a Reuters report, when people who have received political asylum in the UK start earning and get a job, they will have to pay back about 10,000 pounds of their housing and government assistance costs.
The aim of implementing this policy is to make seeking asylum a responsibility and allow the government to recover a part of its costs.
According to the plan, adults who have financial means and have sought asylum in the UK will have to repay the money spent on housing and basic expenses provided by the government, after which they will be eligible to apply for permanent residence.
Immigration is considered a major political issue in the UK. In recent years, there has been an increase in strict measures against illegal immigration and political debates related to it.
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the new reforms were aimed at reducing the financial burden on taxpayers, saying that support for refugees was a right.
But with it came a responsibility and once those people were financially stable they should pay for the use of public resources, although the Home Office has not yet set a minimum income threshold for starting monthly payments.
According to the government, the proposed rules would only apply to adults who could afford to pay. In addition, safeguards would be included to ensure that no one was left in poverty or homelessness. Children would be exempt from the policy, while it would not apply to past cases.
