New Delhi: India has unveiled the timetable for conducting the world’s largest elections, as announced by the Election Commission of India. The elections to select the new parliament of the nation will take place over seven phases from April 19 to early June. This historic event will involve nearly one billion eligible voters.

Rajiv Kumar, the head of the Election Commission, addressed the media, highlighting the significance of the upcoming electoral process in reaffirming India’s commitment to democracy. He stated that the final phase of voting will conclude on June 1, with the votes being tallied on June 4.

The election will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his coalition facing off against a coalition of approximately two dozen opposition parties. Opinion polls indicate a probable victory for Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), known for its Hindu nationalist stance.

If successful, Modi, aged 73, would become only the second prime minister, following Jawaharlal Nehru, to secure a third consecutive term. Modi expressed confidence in his party’s ability to secure the electorate’s support, citing their record of effective governance and public service.
