SIRINAGAR: A probe has been initiated by police in Indian-occupied Kashmir against an Indian Air Force Wing Commander following allegations of sexual assault made by a junior female officer.
The incident allegedly occurred during a New Year’s party on December 31, 2023, at the Air Force Station in Srinagar.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Budgam police station on September 8, citing Section 376 (2) of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses rape committed by members of the armed forces.
A senior police official confirmed that the FIR was registered in response to the female officer’s complaint.
According to the complaint, the alleged assault occurred around 2 AM on January 1, 2024, when the Wing Commander invited the female officer into a room under the pretense of delivering a New Year’s gift.
The complainant has criticized senior officers at the Air Force Station for their inadequate response to her complaint.
Moreover, an internal committee established to investigate the matter took several months to convene and conclude its investigation, ultimately finding the evidence inconclusive due to the absence of eyewitnesses.
The Indian Air Force has yet to release a formal statement on the matter.
