WELLINGTON: New Zealand has introduced a new immigration pathway titled the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, offering qualified foreign professionals, including applicants from countries such as Pakistan, a route to long-term residency.
The visa allows successful applicants to live indefinitely in New Zealand, with the option to include a spouse and dependent children under 24 years of age.
The application fee is set at NZD 6,450. After holding the visa for two years, applicants may become eligible to apply for permanent residency, which grants unrestricted residence rights in the country.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must generally be 55 years or younger, in good physical and mental health, of good character, and proficient in English.
A valid full-time skilled job or job offer from a recognized employer is required, meeting specified working hours and contract conditions.
Salary Requirements
The minimum pay thresholds vary by skill level:
- NZD 35 per hour for ANZSCO Levels 1–3
- NZD 52.50 per hour for ANZSCO Levels 4–5
Applicants must also secure at least six skilled points, which may be earned through factors such as qualifications, professional registration, income level, and New Zealand work experience. Additional points may be available for certain criteria.
English Language Requirement
English proficiency is mandatory for the main applicant, spouse, and children aged 16 or older. Alternatively, families may be required to cover the cost of approved language courses.
Application Process
The process begins with submitting an Expression of Interest, followed by an Invitation to Apply if selected. Applicants must then submit supporting documents, including passports, medical reports, and police clearance certificates, and complete the application within four months.
Additional documentation or interviews may be required during assessment.
Officials say the scheme is designed to attract skilled workers who can contribute to New Zealand’s economy and fill critical labor shortages across sectors.
