BELGRADE: Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced that he will resign from his post in the next few weeks.

According to foreign news agencies, President Vucic, while addressing a large gathering of his supporters in the capital Belgrade, said that he will remain president for a few more weeks and then step down from his post.

However, he did not provide any details regarding the final date of his resignation or the time of dissolving parliament.

It should be noted that this announcement has come at a time when Serbia has been in the grip of political unrest and anti-government protests for the past almost 18 months. The protests began after a tragic accident at a railway station in the city of Novi Sad in November 2024, in which 16 people lost their lives. After this incident, the government faced severe public criticism and opposition pressure.

In his speech, President Vučić also expressed confidence that his party, the Serbian Progressive Party, would win the upcoming elections.

He said that he would continue to fully support his party even after his resignation and has also proposed holding early elections.

Political analysts say that although Vučić will leave the presidency, he could return to the post of prime minister in the future and maintain his influence in domestic politics.

On the other hand, opposition parties and student movements have announced that they will actively participate in the upcoming elections and give President Vučić’s party a tough political competition.
