Punjab launches crackdown against smoke emitting vehicles

PMD issues alert: Smog can disrupt traffic across Pakistan

LAHORE: The government of Punjab has initiated a massive crackdown on vehicles that produce excess smoke and cause environmental degradation. The initiative follows as the authorities increase measures to contain escalating smog levels in the province.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Police Punjab, Muhammad Waqas Nazir, has directed Chief Traffic Officers (CTOs) and District Traffic Officers (DTOs) to adopt stern steps.

He ordered unfit vehicles to be prevented from going onto highways and told the owners that they would get no favors.

During the campaign, traffic police have been directed to stringently check the route permits and fitness certificates of the vehicles. Besides this, action will be initiated against trucks and carriers carrying mud or sand without tarpaulin covers, since uncovered loads are a major source of dust pollution.

DIG Nazir disclosed that the vehicles causing smog have increased by 240 percent this year, making the crackdown all the more imperative. He emphasized that vehicular emissions are a major aspect that needs to be tackled to minimize environmental risks and safeguard public health.
