Benazir Kafalat Program simplifies eligibility, payment checks for families
KARACHI: The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has uncovered a major fraud involving government employees in Matiari, Sindh. Officials announced on Saturday that over 600 public servants improperly received financial aid through their spouses.
This discovery follows a rigorous data verification process using government service records and NADRA databases. The District Accounts Office discovered 607 employees from multiple main departments who worked at various government offices.
These include the police, revenue, irrigation, health, WAPDA, SCARP, and the Education Department. BISP restricts its program to low-income families who need assistance; therefore, these households failed to meet the strict eligibility requirements.
Three months ago, authorities began a crackdown after they notified all Accountant General offices about the situation. Officials have initiated recovery operations through salary deduction methods.
The SCARP department recovered Rs 729,028 from 45 employees through this process. The Irrigation Department recovered Rs 685,747 from 42 individuals.
Staff members at both the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and the Education Department had their salaries reduced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000.
The enforcement action guarantees that funds for poverty relief reach only people who meet the qualifying requirements. Authorities confirmed that the investigation process will extend to additional districts.
They expect more disciplinary actions against public servants who exploit social safety nets.
