RAWALPINDI: A Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) team conducting an operation against non-custom cigarettes was attacked by smugglers in Rawalpindi, leaving one official severely injured.
The incident occurred when the FBR team seized 20 cartons of non-duty-paid cigarettes and was loading them into a government vehicle.
As per details, FBR employee Imran suffered head injuries due to a hit from an iron rod. The attack involved around 35 suspects.
A case has been registered against the accused at the Ganjmandi police station under sections including attempt to murder and resisting arrest.
The accused, reportedly armed with iron rods, forcibly retrieved the seized cigarette cartons and smashed the windows of the FBR vehicle.
The attack and the accused are reportedly related to Zar Gul, Khalid Shah, and Hanan Khan, among others.
The case was registered on the complaint of Acting Director, Regional Tax Office Rawalpindi, Shujaat Ali. The case was registered under other sections, including attempt to murder, resisting arrest.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by FBR teams in conducting anti-smuggling operations, particularly against organized groups involved in large-scale tax evasion and smuggling.
