LAHORE: The Punjab government has started considering importing wheat in view of the fear of a possible 4.5 million tons shortfall in the country.
According to sources, a 12 to 15 percent decrease in wheat production is being estimated due to weather effects. As a result, a total shortage of 4.5 million tons of wheat has been feared in the country.
Sources say that a proposal to import 2.5 to 2.7 million tons of wheat is under consideration. However, the final decision in this regard will be taken after consultation with the federal government.
According to the Food Department, the country does not have the required wheat. While PASSCO, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have a total of 2.2 million tons of wheat.
Sources said that consultations are underway at the government level on the issue of wheat import. And the Punjab government’s position is also being sought.
