Govt reduces Ghee & Oil prices ahead of Ramadan

Cooking oil, ghee prices increase across country

LAHORE: The Government of Punjab has decided to reduce the prices of ghee and cooking oil to provide relief to the public during the holy month of Ramadan.

Special Assistant Salma Butt directed Director General Punjab Food Authority Asim Javed to meet ghee mill owners. The parties involved established that Ramadan special prices will discount all ghee and oil products by Rs 10 to Rs 16 for each kilogram pack.

Salma Butt stated that quality ghee and oil will be available in the market at subsidized rates during the holy month. She explained that global palm oil prices need to decrease further for the public to receive extra benefits which will happen after consulting with the industry.

Director General Punjab Food Authority, Asim Javed, said there is a need to introduce a modern system in the market to ensure the supply of quality ghee.

According to him, affordable and modern methods are available to reduce trans fatty acid levels, while the ghee testing system is also being upgraded to meet international standards. He requested mill owners to provide recommendations that would help them improve the quality of ghee and oil products.

Chairman of the Ghee Mills Association, Asjad Arif, said the Punjab Food Authority has guided the oil and ghee industry and ensured the implementation of international standards in the province.

The chairman supported the harassment crackdown against adulteration and fraud while assuring that his association would deliver sufficient quality ghee during Ramadan, which they would use to support the authority efforts against adulteration.
