ISLAMABAD: The federal government has unveiled a plan to provide a subsidy of Rs100 per litre to motorcycle owners for up to 20 litres of petrol per month, following the recent price hike to Rs458.40 per litre.
Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced the measure at a press conference but did not provide details on its implementation or clarify whether all motorcycle owners will be eligible.
Under the new relief measures, Aurangzeb said motorcyclists will receive a subsidy of Rs100 per liter for up to 20 liters of petrol per month, adding that it will be applicable for the next three months. Intercity and freer transport services will also be eligible for the same subsidy for one month.
The government set petrol and diesel prices at Rs458.40 and Rs520.35 per liter, respectively, following a steep increase of Rs138 per liter for petrol and Rs184 per liter for diesel.
Currently, motorcycle owners are paying the new petrol price without any subsidy as they await clarification on eligibility and how to access the relief.
Advisor to the Finance Minister, Khurram Shehzad, has provided some details regarding the scheme.
He stated that the provinces have agreed to provide the subsidy to motorcyclists, but not all motorcycle owners will be eligible. Owners of heavy motorcycles, he said, are excluded, as they are considered capable of bearing the rising fuel costs.
Shehzad also suggested that BISP data may be used to target subsidies to the most vulnerable. However, many people severely affected by the price hike are not registered with BISP.
to reports, motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 70cc will be eligible for the Rs100 per litre petrol subsidy. Additionally, only individuals who have registered their vehicles in their own names will be able to benefit from the discount.
The advisor to finance minister said a mobile app will be used to determine whether a motorcyclist qualifies for the subsidy.
Earlier, it emerged that the government decided to procure smartphones for petrol pumps which will be used to provide subsidy to motorcyclists and keep the record.
Note: The government is yet to officially announce the procedure to provide targeted subsidy to people
