KP govt to increase BRT fares

PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has decided to increase fares on the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system by Rs 5 to Rs 10 to cover operating costs, here on Sunday.

As per the media reports, Peshawar BRT is facing a loss of more than 3 billion rupees annually. To deal with this, a subsidy of 3 billion rupees was allocated for BRT in the provincial budget.

In the meeting presided over by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam, consideration was given to increasing rents to reduce expenses and increase income. According to the documents, the final decision to increase the fares will be taken by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) board.

In the meeting, it was also directed to introduce daily unlimited travel pass for common people at Rs.150. The pass will be available for women, students, transgender individuals and senior citizens for Rs 100.

One rupee per passenger will be earmarked for KPUMA’s operational expenses, the documents said.

KP Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam confirmed the hike in fares in an interview and said that the decision will be taken by the KPUMA board.
