ISLAMABAD: Despite government efforts to control sugar prices, the cost of sugar in Pakistan continues to skyrocket, reaching as high as Rs. 180 per kilogram.
This surge comes just two days after the Deputy Prime Minister announced a fixed retail price of Rs. 164 per kilogram, highlighting the government’s struggle to regulate sugar prices.
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the maximum price of sugar is again meager and delicately dissected: it has fallen to Rs. 180 per kilogram and has a recent average of Rs.170.41 per kilogram.
In large cities such as Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar, sugar is selling at Rs.180 per kilogram. The average price has decreased by Rs. 1.49 per kilogram in the last week, but at an average price of Rs.170.41 per kilogram, the price of sugar is still more expensive than what the government announced to be the fixed price.
Sugar prices continue to increase and become even more difficult to control, despite government intervention.
