LAHORE: As Eid-ul-Adha draws closer, consumers around Lahore seem to be getting hit by a sharp spike in the prices of green spices and vegetables sold in local open markets, and it is adding a lot more pressure to household budgets during this festive stretch.
Based on market observations that local media have been reporting, the cost of usual day-to-day items—things like lemons, garlic, ginger, onions, tomatoes, and green chillies—have jumped far above the official government rate lists.
Because of this, even simple kitchen staples are becoming harder to afford for a good number of residents. People say it is getting worse just a few days before Eid-ul-Adha, when demand for fresh ingredients normally rises.
Shoppers in different parts of Lahore have also voiced frustration over what they call “arbitrary and uncontrolled” pricing in the open market.
Many are now urging the authorities, as well as price control magistrates, to step in right away against what they describe as profiteering vendors.
Even with official rate lists being issued, enforcement still looks inconsistent. That gap lets some shopkeepers charge a lot higher prices on high-demand days, especially in the run-up to Eid.
This sudden rise in essential food items is, in turn, increasing the strain on families that are already dealing with inflation. Many citizens say they’re now choosing to buy less, or switching toward cheaper—lower quality, kind of substitutes, to keep budgets steady.
Authorities are being pressed to conduct more market inspections, enforce the official price lists properly, and make sure consumers get some real relief during the Eid season.
