KP Govt abolished second shift in 176 schools across province: Here’s why

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced the abolition of second shift in 176 schools in 14 districts of the province.

As per the issued notification, the decision will affect schools in various districts including Peshawar, Mardan, Upper Dir, Swat, Charsadda, Shangla, Haripur, Kohat, Battagram, Malakand, Lower Dir, Nowshera, Abbottabad and Mansehra.

In an official directive, district education officers were directed to stop payment of salaries to teachers engaged in second shift. 43 schools in Peshawar, 42 in Mardan, 25 in Deer Bala and 17 in Swat have been affected by this move.

Other affected districts include Charsadda, where 14 schools will no longer run second shift, followed by 8 in Shangla, 7 in Haripur, 5 in Kohat and 3 in Battagram.

Apart from this, the notification said that 4 shifts in Malakand, 3 in Lower Dir, 2 in Nowshera and Abbottabad, 2 and 2 in one school in Mansehra have also been abolished.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Minister Faisal Tarakai cited the decision as a response to a departmental report that identified low enrollment in the affected schools.

He assured that the students of these schools will be given places in nearby educational institutions to ensure continuity of their education.
