KARACHI: Karachi is set to witness a big education initiative as the Directorate General of Basic Education Community Schools (BECS), Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, will be opening 100 new community (non-formal) schools on Saturday, September 13.
The initiative aims to enroll out-of-school children in classes and offer free education in the city’s most backward slums.
This action is taken in view of the staggering figure of children in Karachi slum settlements who continue to be out of school due to poverty and denial of access.
Federal Education Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqi, who will open the ceremony at the Liaquat Memorial Library Auditorium, stated the programme is all about “opening doors to hope” for poor families.
BECS officials claim that the teaching material and books are already being out to provide a smooth flow. The registration reflects an impressive response from girls, which indicates increased awareness of the education of women in poor localities.
The inaugural ceremony will be graced by top officials such as the Federal Education Secretary, while students will present performances, and new teachers will be issued appointment letters.
The project is not only anticipated to decrease the number of out-of-school children in Karachi but also to provide a model for attaining educational parity across the country.
