Transgender students will receive stipend of Rs.10,000

LAHORE: The Lahore Education Authority has announced a monthly stipend of Rs10,000 for transgender students enrolled in government schools, which is a progressive move.

More specifically, as reported by multiple media outlets, students enrolled in Government Girls High School Garden Town will receive a stipend of Rs 5,000 per month in addition to an additional Rs 5,000 for transportation.

This financial support comes with the condition of maintaining an 80 percent attendance, ensuring a commitment to regular participation in the educational process.

Nayyar Iqbal, the District Education Officer (Secondary) in Lahore, emphasized that the stipend kicks in upon student registration. He also mentioned a willingness to expand the number of schools catering to transgender individuals if there is an increased demand for such educational facilities.

Classes for transgender students have been ongoing at the Garden Town school for the past year, with educational sessions scheduled on the first three days of the week.

The commitment to inclusivity extends beyond financial aid, as the students are not only provided with free education but also receive textbooks and meals.

Moreover, experienced educators are actively involved in delivering quality education to transgender students within the school, reflecting a holistic approach to their educational journey.
