ISLAMABAD: Novo Nordisk announced on April 23, 2026, that its oral diabetes medicine semaglutide passed its testing requirements because it decreased blood sugar levels among pediatric patients.
The PIONEER TEENS trial successfully achieved its primary objective, which demonstrated that an oral GLP-1 medication had its first successful result among younger patients.
The breakthrough provides treatment options for a group of patients who currently have limited choices beyond insulin and metformin. The study lasted 26 weeks and involved 132 patients who were between 10 and 17 years old.
The results demonstrated that once-daily diabetes treatment users achieved a 0.83 percentage point greater reduction in HbA1c blood sugar levels than members of the placebo group.
The drug showed good tolerability, while its safety results matched those observed in earlier adult study results. Metformin currently struggles to maintain blood sugar control in almost 50 percent of adolescent patients.
Novo Nordisk intends to obtain U.S. and EU regulatory approval during the second half of 2026 based on the positive outcomes of its study.
The product would become the first oral GLP-1 treatment approved for use in pediatric patients if it receives authorization. The expansion of their business operations will enable Novo to maintain its market dominance when youth-onset type 2 diabetes rates continue to increase around the world.
