ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has supported reduction in heavy taxes imposed on mobile phones imported from abroad, after which there is hope of a significant reduction in mobile phone prices in Pakistan by 2026.

According to PTA officials, due to the current tax policy, a large number of people are deprived of buying modern smartphones, while public concern over this situation is constantly increasing.

According to sources, the PTA has sent recommendations to the government, stating that mobile phones are no longer just a luxury but have become a basic necessity for education, business, digital banking and online employment. In such a situation, heavy duties and taxes on imported mobile phones have made it difficult for the common consumer to access modern technology.

The PTA says that Pakistanis living abroad are also facing severe difficulties in bringing mobile phones for their use upon returning home. Due to high taxes, phone registration at airports has become an expensive step, on which complaints have been received repeatedly from overseas Pakistanis.

According to the authority, if taxes are reduced appropriately, not only will the public get relief but the legal import of mobile phones will also increase.

According to experts, due to heavy taxes, the prices of mobile phones in Pakistan are currently much higher than in other countries in the region, due to which smuggling and use of illegal phones are also being seen.

The reduction in taxes will not only increase competition in the market but may also benefit the government in revenue on a long-term basis.

PTA officials have expressed hope that the federal government will review the taxes imposed on mobile phones in the next fiscal year’s budget or the 2026 policy.

If the recommendations are approved, Pakistani consumers will be able to buy modern mobile phones at lower prices in the coming year, which will also help in realizing the dream of Digital Pakistan.
