ISLAMABAD – Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza survived another attack on his life during a public lecture on Wednesday, authorities confirmed. The assault reportedly occurred as Mirza posed for photos with attendees.
According to eyewitnesses, the attacker, allegedly associated with Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and hailing from Abbottabad, grabbed Mirza by the neck and tried to strangle him. The assailant also threw Mirza’s turban to the ground while shouting slogans linked to the hardline religious party.
A formal complaint has been filed by a core committee member of Mirza’s organization, the Quran-o-Sunnat Research Academy. Investigations are ongoing, though TLP has not issued any public statement regarding the incident.
This is not the first life-threatening attack Mirza has faced. He previously survived a stabbing at his academy when an assailant attempted to kill him with a knife. Despite injuries, he survived with the help of his followers.
Mirza, a YouTuber and religious commentator, has attracted both millions of followers and strong criticism. His unconventional interpretations of religious texts have often made him a target for conservative groups, resulting in repeated threats to his life.
The scholar also has a controversial legal history. He was previously arrested in a blasphemy-related case and spent several months in jail before being released on bail. The latest attack has reignited debates across Pakistan about religious freedom, public safety, and the risks faced by scholars who present non-traditional viewpoints.
Security experts and civil society activists have called for enhanced protection measures for religious speakers like Mirza, stressing that public lectures must remain safe spaces for dialogue.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges for public figures in Pakistan who take bold or unconventional stances on religion, with both followers and critics closely watching the developments.
