Erbil explosions were reported on Sunday evening in northern Iraq. The blasts were heard in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region.
An international news agency reporter near the US consulate confirmed the sound of multiple explosions.
Erbil hosts military facilities used by US forces. This made the situation more serious.
Air Defences Intercept Attacks
A photographer near Erbil airport said air defence systems were active. The airport area hosts troops from the US-led coalition.
Defence systems appeared to intercept incoming threats. It was not immediately clear whether the attacks involved missiles or drones.
Officials have not yet shared full details about the nature of the attack.
Group Claims Responsibility
A group calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility. It said it launched dozens of drones toward US bases in Iraq and nearby areas.
However, the group did not provide specific information about the targets.
The alliance includes Iran-backed armed factions operating in Iraq.
Rising Regional Tensions
Pro-Iran groups, including Kataeb Hezbollah, earlier stated they would not remain neutral in the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran.
They said they would defend Iran if needed.
On Sunday morning, Iran also claimed it targeted US bases in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
Drone Interceptions Over Erbil
Later in the day, US defence systems reportedly intercepted drones over Erbil. A small Iran-backed Iraqi group also claimed responsibility for drone attacks in the area.
The situation remains tense as regional tensions continue to rise.
Authorities have not confirmed casualties or damage so far.
