Pakistan mediation in US Iran tensions has come into focus as diplomatic efforts intensify to reduce rising conflict between Washington and Tehran. Pakistan played a key role in recent weeks by facilitating contacts, while US Vice President JD Vance joined behind-the-scenes talks to support de-escalation.
According to international media reports, US President Donald Trump confirmed that senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and JD Vance, were directly involved in diplomatic outreach to Iran. This marks one of the clearest acknowledgments of high-level US engagement in recent tensions.
Reports suggest that Pakistan has been leading communication efforts between the two sides since late March. Asim Munir reportedly contacted key figures, including JD Vance, US envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The goal was to shape a two-phase plan aimed at stopping further escalation.
Sources indicate that a US delegation was close to visiting Islamabad on two occasions. However, Iran delayed the meetings, seeking more time for internal consultations.
At the same time, tensions remained high. President Trump warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and threatened action against energy infrastructure. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard issued strong warnings, saying further attacks could lead to a broader response.
Recent clashes reportedly included strikes on Iran’s key oil export hub, Kharg Island, and claims of Iranian targeting of petrochemical facilities in Saudi Arabia. These developments increased urgency for diplomatic intervention.
Analysts say Tehran sees JD Vance as a more acceptable figure compared to other US officials. This perception is linked to his past opposition to military action against Iran and his absence from earlier negotiations that ended in joint US-Israeli strikes moves Iran viewed as a breach of trust.
Experts also note that internal political dynamics in Iran have made negotiations more sensitive. Changes in power balance following developments linked to Ali Khamenei have added complexity to the situation.
Observers believe JD Vance’s diplomatic role may also carry political significance within the United States. He is widely seen as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, and success in easing tensions could strengthen his position.
