The proposed Peshawar New York sister city partnership has taken a significant step forward after the New York City Mayor’s Office sent a draft agreement to the Governor House in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The move follows approval from the provincial cabinet and signals growing municipal cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.
Governor Faisal Karim Kundi welcomed the development and described it as a forward-looking initiative. He said the agreement reflects a shared commitment to stronger public-level relations and global urban collaboration.
According to officials, the partnership aims to promote people-to-people ties while encouraging institutional links between the two cities. Authorities believe such cooperation can help expand international engagement and create opportunities for mutual learning.
Under the proposed arrangement, both cities are expected to work together in several priority sectors. These include economic growth, education, youth skill development, scientific and technological activities, cultural exchanges, and reciprocal high-level visits.
The governor noted that the agreement could improve Peshawar’s global image and support new pathways for education and technical training. He added that the initiative may also strengthen employment prospects for young people by connecting the city with modern industries and international networks.
Earlier, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government approved a draft Memorandum of Understanding to formalize the relationship. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister, with the goal of promoting cooperation across cultural, trade, economic, and governance sectors.
Officials view the Peshawar New York sister city initiative as part of a broader strategy to position the provincial capital as a city open to global partnerships. Relevant departments have been directed to proceed with the formal process in coordination with stakeholders from both sides.
Sister city agreements are commonly used worldwide to foster economic, cultural, and educational exchanges while building long-term diplomatic connections at the municipal level.
If finalized, the partnership could mark a notable milestone in Pakistan–US urban relations. Observers say such collaborations often help cities share expertise, attract investment, and promote cultural understanding. For Peshawar, leaders hope the agreement will contribute to socio-economic development and strengthen its presence on the global stage.
