Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the Punjab Mega Sports City project, confirming that construction will begin in 2026. She described the year as the “Year of Youth,” signaling the provincial government’s strong focus on sports and young people.
The announcement came during a ceremony where the chief minister outlined plans to expand sports infrastructure. She said the project aims to provide modern facilities and create more opportunities for athletes across Punjab. As a result, officials expect stronger participation in organized sports.
Moreover, Maryam Nawaz revealed that around 3,000 athletes will compete in the upcoming Punjab Games. She noted that the large number reflects growing interest in sports throughout the province. The government, she added, is working to revive playgrounds and improve training spaces.
According to the chief minister, the Punjab Mega Sports City will help guide young people toward healthy activities. She stressed the need to reduce excessive mobile phone use and encourage physical exercise instead. Therefore, the initiative focuses on building an active and disciplined youth community.
Maryam Nawaz also expressed confidence in the province’s sporting talent. She assured athletes that authorities will provide the support and facilities required for success. In addition, she said the administration wants to open pathways for future champions at national and international levels.
During her address, the chief minister highlighted the importance of women in development. She stated that women now work alongside men in many sectors and continue to take leadership roles. Furthermore, she said women have the ability to lead institutions, manage industries, and serve in top government positions.
She praised young girls who welcomed her at the event and reaffirmed that women’s empowerment remains a government priority. At the same time, she claimed that crimes against women in Punjab have declined, calling it a positive sign of improved safety.
Referring to the recent Basant festival in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz said authorities ensured strong compliance with regulations. She added that public events should offer safe and joyful experiences for citizens.
The chief minister concluded by stating that providing positive opportunities is part of her responsibility to the people of Punjab. Overall, the government plans to continue investing in youth programs, sports promotion, and initiatives that support social progress across the province.
