RIYADH: Saudi Arabia warns Iran that it may take direct retaliation if the kingdom or its energy facilities come under attack.
According to a report by the British news agency, Saudi officials sent a message to Tehran during rising Middle East tensions. They stressed that Saudi Arabia wants a diplomatic solution between Iran and the United States but will defend its security if needed.
Saudi Arabia warns Iran that any attack on its territory or oil infrastructure will not be tolerated. Officials made it clear that Riyadh will not remain silent if its national interests are threatened.
Sources said Gulf countries have so far not allowed the United States to use their airspace for military action against Iran. However, Saudi Arabia warns Iran that the situation could change if attacks continue in the region.
The report added that Riyadh may consider allowing US forces to use Saudi military bases if regional tensions increase further.
Meanwhile, Iran says its actions are not aimed at Gulf countries. Tehran claims its targets are American interests and military positions in the region.
Iran has also demanded the closure of US military bases operating across the Middle East.
According to the report, Saudi Arabia has remained in contact with Tehran through diplomatic channels since February 28. On that date, the United States and Israel reportedly started military operations against Iran.
So far, there has been no official response from either Saudi Arabia or Iran regarding the report. The lack of confirmation has increased uncertainty in the region.
