Pakistani cricket legend Wasim Akram has put an end to false online reports after AI-generated videos claiming he had died spread rapidly across social media, leaving many fans alarmed.
The former Pakistan captain addressed the rumors in a video shared on his Instagram account, confirming that he is safe and encouraging people to verify information before accepting viral content as fact.
Responding with his trademark sense of humor, Akram joked about the flood of messages asking if he was alive. He sarcastically remarked that he was “making this video after dying,” making it clear that the fabricated clips had no truth behind them.
The cricket icon expressed surprise that so many social media users believed the AI-generated videos. He revealed that the fake content even included artificial versions of the voices of former Pakistan stars Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar, making the misinformation appear more convincing.
While acknowledging the technical effort behind creating such videos, Akram said those responsible could use their abilities for more constructive purposes. He also shared a well-known Punjabi proverb, explaining that simply carrying knowledge does not make a person wise, adding that even copying requires intelligence.
Akram concluded his message by thanking fans who reached out to check on his well-being and reassured everyone that he is in good health.
Widely celebrated as the “Sultan of Swing,” Wasim Akram remains one of cricket’s greatest fast bowlers. He played a key role in Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup victory and became the first bowler in One Day International history to claim 500 wickets.
