Amna Baloch takes charge as Pakistan’s 33rd foreign secretary

ISLAMABAD (Rizwan Abbasi): Amna Baloch, a veteran diplomat, has taken charge as the 33rd Foreign Secretary of Pakistan replacing Syrus Sajjad Qazi, the Foreign Office said on Wednesday.

Amna Baloch, a Grade-22 officer of the Foreign Service of Pakistan was appointed last week becoming the second female Foreign Secretary after Tehmina Janjua.

Speaking at the farewell reception of Ambassador Syrus Sajjad Qazi, — who stepped down as the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan on Tuesday upon attaining superannuation — Amna Baloch thanked Syrus for his leadership and contributions over a 34-year diplomatic career while praising his professionalism, acumen, and warm demeanor.

During her diplomatic career, Ambassador Baloch, a mother of two, has held several important assignments in Islamabad and Pakistan’s Mission abroad including the additional secretary in the foreign minister’s office.

The newly appointed foreign secretary served as Pakistan’s Consul General to Chengdu, China from 2014 to 2017. He later continued his position as the High Commissioner to Malaysia from 2019 to 2023 and Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg from 2023 to 2024.

She holds a master’s degree in history and joined the Pakistan Foreign Service in 1991. She also served as a joint secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office.
